Karen sat in the park outside her office building, quietly eating her lunch and watching the world pass by. Being able to get outside for an hour or so each day was a blessing. She hadn't been feeling very sociable lately so she had no real desire to join the gossip tables in the company lunch room.

Truth be told, Karen was frustrated. In fact, she was more than frustrated. Her dating life had fizzled for the past few months. Her sex life was non-existent and, more and more, she found herself longing for the caress of someone special. Hearing her office mates discussing their sexual escapades, blind dates and their success with free online dating made Karen feel less attractive than ever. Was she not lovable? She was really starting to wonder.

As she sat enjoying the shade in her favorite spot, she noticed a new billboard had been erected across the street. By coincidence, it was announcing one of the free online dating sites her coworkers had been discussing. A couple of the men and one of the women were currently dating people they'd met through the site. Karen had never considered free online dating to be an avenue she'd pursue but looking at the beautiful happy faces on the billboard started to weaken her resolve.

Picking up her lunch bag and smoothing her skirt, Karen started a slow stroll back to the office. "Maybe I should give the free online dating thing a try," she muttered to herself, "since I'm not having any grand success on my own!" Looking at her watch, Karen picked up the pace and returned to the office with ten minutes remaining in her lunch hour.

Slipping into her work cubicle before anyone else had returned, Karen quickly logged on to her computer and pulled up a browser. She typed in the website URL for the dating site and had a look around the homepage. Not seeing anything offensive, she decided that this might be a good place to start. Karen noticed an option to take a virtual tour through some of the most recently created profiles. "Why not?" she shrugged and clicked the button for male profiles. She was actually pleased to see a lot of very normal looking men. She had expected over the top pictures and poses, each trying to best the other. Instead, she was presented with a number of local men in her age bracket that seemed pleasant enough. Karen admitted to herself, finally, that she had always thought the free online dating sites were only about sex and extra-marital affairs. What she realized was that there were a lot of lonely people, just like herself, that were looking to meet someone new, in spite of their hectic day to day lives.

Hearing voices coming down the hall, Karen knew people were arriving back from the lunch room. Quickly, she closed her browser and decided that, when she arrived home that very night, she would step into a new on-line social circle.
